What is Candle Memory? (And How to Prevent Tunnelling)
If you’ve ever lit a candle and noticed it burning straight down the centre, leaving wax around the edges — you’re not alone.
This is called tunnelling.
And more often than not, it comes down to something called candle memory.
What is Candle Memory?
Candles have something known as a “memory”.
This means the wax remembers how it melted during the first burn.
If the candle isn’t burned all the way to the edge the first time, it sets that pattern — and continues to burn in a tunnel with each use.
It’s not a fault in the candle.
It’s simply how wax behaves.
Why Do Candles Tunnel?
Tunnelling happens when the wax pool doesn’t reach the edges of the container.
This is usually caused by:
- blowing the candle out too early
- not allowing enough time for a full melt pool
- drafts affecting how the flame burns
Once this pattern is set, the candle continues to follow it.
How to Prevent Candle Tunnelling
The good news is — it’s easy to prevent.
- Let the First Burn Set the Memory
The first burn is the most important.
Allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges before extinguishing. This sets the candle’s memory and helps future burns stay even.
- Be Patient
Depending on the size of your candle, this may take a couple of hours. Our Vaso Scented Candles take approx. 3-4 hrs to reach the edge.
It’s a small step that makes a big difference.
- Avoid Drafts
Airflow can disrupt how the candle burns, causing uneven melting.
Keep your candle away from open windows, fans or air vents.
Can You Fix a Tunnelling Candle?
If your candle has already started tunnelling, there are ways to gently correct it — such as allowing a longer burn to help even out the wax.
But prevention is always easier than fixing it later.
A Better Candle Experience
When a candle burns evenly, everything changes.
The scent carries more consistently.
The wax melts smoothly.
The experience feels calmer, more intentional.
Our Vaso Scented Candles are designed to do exactly this — offering a deeper, more immersive scent experience when cared for properly.
Candles aren’t just something you light and forget.
With a little care, they become something more — a small, steady moment in your day.
And sometimes, it starts with something as simple as the first burn.
